Understanding LDS Faith Transitions

Course #2 of the Navigating Faith Differences in Marriage bundle
By Valerie Hamaker, MA, NCC, LPC, CPT

In this powerful and emotionally attuned course, Valerie guides couples through a compassionate exploration of what it means to experience—or witness—a faith crisis within a Latter-day Saint context. Using insights from the LDS Faith Crisis Report and her background in attachment theory, she helps partners understand both the psychological and relational dimensions of this experience.

Couples will learn how faith shifts can activate deep emotional and attachment patterns, sometimes leading to relational trauma, disconnection, or misunderstanding. Through guided exercises, Valerie supports each partner in learning to track emotion, identify needs, and develop structure for healing communication. Together, couples can move beyond cycles of disaffection toward deeper empathy, stability, and connection.

Following this course, you will:

  • Understand key findings from the LDS Faith Crisis Report and how they relate to relational and emotional well-being
  • Recognize the stages of a faith crisis and their impact on both individual and shared identity
  • Identify attachment styles and how early patterning affects response to stress and change
  • Learn practical communication tools for tracking emotions and meeting one another’s needs
  • Gain strategies to break the “perpetual cycle of disaffection” and foster renewed trust and closeness

No. These courses are designed to support anyone experiencing a shift in their LDS religious beliefs, whether you are still attending, have stepped away, or are somewhere in between.

That’s okay. While some couples choose to go through certain courses together, it’s not required—and you can experience meaningful growth on your own.

Each course is designed to be effective whether you’re taking it solo or as a couple. Many individuals begin this work alone and still see powerful shifts in how they show up in their relationships, communicate their needs, and hold space for differences. You’re not behind or doing it wrong if you’re the only one engaging—this work begins with you, and that’s more than enough.

Yes. Your enrollment and participation are entirely private. No one else will know you’ve enrolled unless you choose to share that.
